Review: by Anthony and Lee

We went into Getaway only knowing that Ethan Hawke and Selena Gomez were it.  The fact that we hadn't heard much buzz about it should have been a red flag.

What We Liked:

The movie was blessedly short.

What We Didn’t Like:

The plot made absolutely no sense at all, and the characters’ motivations were poorly handled.  The villain’s constant needling and urging Ethan Hawke to comply with his wishes got old really quickly.  It irritated us enough to make us consider walking out.

As if the plot wasn’t bad enough, both the writing and the acting were terrible.  Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke had horrible scene after horrible scene.  The conversations were awkward, and their budding friendship was seriously difficult to believe.  Every time Selena Gomez opened her mouth, it seemed like she was reading lines directly from the “key plot points script.”  Her character was nothing more than a plot device to explain things to the audience.

The portrayal of the villain, Jon Voight, was seriously creepy.  There were a bunch of terribly awkward close-ups of his mouth that were meant to be mysterious but completely missed the mark.

The action scenes were way over the top as well.  There were unnecessary explosions left and right and long car chase sequences with an obscene number of car crashes.

Finally, the movie was just unrealistic. It made a huge deal about how tricked out the Super Shelby Mustang that Ethan Hawke drove was, yet for some reason the Shelby was unable to outrun some dinky little police cars; furthermore, we were supposed to believe that he could drive it all day and all night into the sunrise without needing to fill up on gas.

The whole movie felt like a big commercial, promoting Ford’s Super Shelby Mustang, GoPro cameras, and Apple products.

Summary

Getaway was just a bad movie that we couldn’t in good faith recommend to anybody. The plot doesn’t hold together, the acting is terrible, and the action scenes are horribly cliché.
