Review: by Anthony and Lee

Ron Howard's thrilling re-telling of a true story of the rivalry between Formula 1 Racing superstars James Hunt and Niki Lauda? Count us in!

What We Liked:

The plot was fantastic, and the characters were amazing.  There was tons of character development for both of the lead roles, from how they got started in the Formula 1 pro-series to their relationships with their wives and their passions for racing.  We found ourselves rooting for both Hunt and Lauda, for different reasons.  James Hunt was the daredevil, completely full of raw talent.  He was willing to take high risks in exchange for high pay-off.  Niki Lauda, on the other hand, was a genius.  Where he lacked in natural talent, he more than made up in intellect and precision, banking on consistency rather than the flash in the pan theatrics of Hunt.

The acting was genuinely good.  Daniel Brühl was fantastic as Niki Lauda, specifically in the scenes in the hospital.  He really captured Lauda’s determination and burning passion.  Chris Hemsworth nailed his role as James Hunt as well.  He was perfect to play the wild, passionate, thrill-seeking playboy.  He’s a natural born rockstar.  Even Olivia Wilde, whose role was small, was pretty darn good.  Her portrayal of Hunt’s supermodel wife was convincing, and her English accent was certainly passable.

The action wasn’t hard to come by.  It was a movie about Formula 1 racers.  The multiple camera angles everywhere from the overhead blimp cam to the driver’s helmet made the action captivating, and kept us on the edges of our seats throughout the film.

Hans Zimmer’s musical score was also fantastic.  That, coupled with the great acting, really made the scenes come to life.

What We Didn’t Like:

There was not much not to enjoy.  We will say that the movie started off a bit slow, however.
