[Book News] The Original ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy is being Retold

Disney and Lucasfilm are retelling the original trilogy Star Wars films through three new novels.

Disney and Lucasfilm are releasing three new novels that retell the original three Star Wars films, but they’ll be digging deeper into the stories and characters to share new insights and scenes.

In a new series coming September 22, fans will experience the original trilogy in an entirely different way,” the announcement says, “With Star Wars: A New Hope — The Princess, The Scoundrel, and The Farm Boy by Alexandra Bracken (the Darkest Minds series), Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back — So You Want to Be a Jedi by Adam Gidwitz (A Tale Dark & Grimm series), and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi — Beware the Power of the Dark Side! by Tom Angleberger (the Origami Yoda series).”

These are new writers telling parts of the story we thought we knew, but there will be much more for the superfan. In other words, it’s going to be worth revisiting this series.

“But these are more than just mere retellings from this top talent; these are fresh interpretations — true to the films but filtered through each author’s vision,” the official site states. “In each novel, the authors get inside the characters’ heads, tell us about the scenes between the scenes, and even teach us how to be a Jedi.”

You can read an excerpt of the first book right now. It’s a retelling of the opening scenes of the first movie, but from the point of view of Princess Leia.

“The press was even worse, claiming she was a “princess playing dress-up” and not a real diplomat and politician,” the text reads, in part. “They saw the image her aunts had crafted for her, not the person her father had trained her to become. No matter how many times she traveled the length of the galaxy to bring attention and aid to the suffering, still — still &dmash; the media refused to look past her label of ‘princess.'”

It’s definitely written for a young audience, but there’s a lot of new stuff here to digest. This is a pretty big move, and does even more to expand the new canon of this universe. Maybe we’ll learn a bit more about a certain someone’s wife?
