[Movie News] Christian Bale Circling ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

In an April 2017 interview with Collider to promote The Promise Christian Bale said this in response to being asked about ever filming another superhero movie or a marvel superhero movie:

BALE: No, I’m not interested in doing that. I’ve never seen — I’m trying to think if that’s correct, I think I’m actually correct, I can’t remember a single superhero film that I’ve ever watched. Apart from the ones I made and like, the Christopher Reeve Superman films.

In December 2011 it was reported that Natalie Portman was very upset with Marvel after Patty Jenkins was dropped as director for Thor: The Dark World. Portman went on to tell the Wall Street Journal in August 2016:

As far as I know, I’m done. I mean, I don’t know if maybe one day they’ll ask for an Avengers 7 or whatever, I have no idea. But as far as I know, I’m done. It was a great thing to be a part of.

I bring both of these points up to say this. BOTH of these actors seem to be really excited to come back into the superhero movie genre and work with Marvel. Somethings changed. Is it the numerous actors and actresses that have expressed how much they’ve enjoyed working with certain directors for various Marvel projects of late? Are their children or grandchildren asking them to do a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

As far as the speculation as to who Christian Bale may portray…my personal theory is that he’ll play Dario Agger, CEO of Roxxon Energy Corp, part-time Minotaur. This is based on the reporting that Thor: Love and Thunder will be adapting Jason Aarons’ The Mighty Thor comic story where Jane Foster becomes Thor. In this story one of her adversaries is Roxxon and their CEO. This also allows for the introduction of Rosalind Solomon, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., who is a fantastic character in her own right.

Another guess would be Gorr the God Butcher. In the comics, the whole reason Thor is unworthy to wield Mjolnir is due to the interactions he had with Gorr. Now I highly doubt everything would be a 1:1 translation but that could also happen which would leave the Hammer available for someone else to pick it up.

Lastly, I’d speculate Bale playing Baldur the Brave, or maybe a character not directly tied to Thor…such as the Silver Surfer. I highly doubt that the first time we’ll see any of the Fantastic Four or their accompanying characters will be in the first MCU Fantastic Four movie so why not start planting those seeds now. Thor could be out and about in space and could easily cross paths with the Herald of Galactus.

Regardless of who Bale will be playing, I’m excited to see it and I’m thrilled that he’s willing to put on a cape again.

Christian Bale is in negotiations to join Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Love and Thunder,” Varietyhas confirmed.

Should the deal close, it would be Bale’s first big franchise movie since his final performance as Bruce Wayne/Batman in 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises.”

The fourth film in the “Thor” franchise — which is slated to open Nov. 5, 2021 — will be directed by “Thor: Ragnarok” filmmaker Taika Waititi, with Chris Hemsworth playing the titular superhero, Tessa Thompson reprising her role from “Ragnarok” as Valkyrie, and Natalie Portman returning to the franchise for the first time since 2013’s “Thor: The Dark World.” Collider first reported the news Bale was in talks for “Love and Thunder.”
