Review: by Anthony and Lee

The next big comic book movie from Marvel's phase 2 lineup,  Thor: The Dark World featured Chris Hemsworth as the god of thunder with his mighty hammer Mjolnir, Natalie Portman returning as Jane Foster, and Christopher Eccleston as the villain Malekith.  Of course we had to see this highly anticipated sequel.

What We Liked:

Thor: The Dark World learned from its predecessor, applying what work for it in this movie.  It kept up the humor of Thor doing normal human things like using coat hangers and riding the London Underground, and it continued to feature the unlikely comedy duo of Natalie Portman and Kat Dennings, who play really well of off each other.  Their set up/punchline routine was great, and Kat Dennings did an all-around decent job as the comic relief.

It was more fantasy in nature than the last, with more scenes in Asgard and the other realms apart from Earth/Midgard.  The set design and CG were really brought into play in those scenes, making each of the realms uniquely different from the others.

Tom Hiddleston, of course, stole the show as Loki.  Every scene of his was great, especially his interactions with Hemsworth and their brotherly bickering.  There was definitely some character development for Loki in this movie as well, which was nice for the fans.

The action was, of course, fantastic, particularly the battle scenes at Asgard.  They looked like something out of Star Wars with all of the ships flying around, firing at each other, pulling off beautiful evasive maneuvers around the picturesque Asgardian landscape and buildings. Thor’s every battle, with the mighty Mjolnir crackling with electricity, left us expecting a hammer shaped hole to appear in each of his enemies.

What We Didn’t Like:

We felt that Frigga (Rene Russo) and Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander) should have been utilized more in the movie, but the fight scenes they did have showed them kicking butt with the best of the Asgardians.

Also, Christopher Eccleston’s portrayal of Malekith felt bland.  We never believed that he stood a chance of winning.  After seeing Eccleston as the Doctor in 2005’s Doctor Who reboot, we knew could have brought much more to the performance.

Summary

Thor: The Dark World was a great follow-up to the original and definitely set the tone for upcoming Thor films.

  1. good review, glad they fixed some of the pacing problems in the first one. also good to hear we are getting more of the realms and less earth…were there any easter eggs/links to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

    • There’s 2 after credit scenes, one of which hints towards Guardians of the Galaxy. As far as stuff during the movie I’d have to watch it again and pay more attention to stuff, I’m certain they’re there though.
