In this spin on the fairy tale, Hansel & Gretel are now bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world. As the fabled Blood Moon approaches, the siblings encounter a new form of evil that might hold a secret to their past.
What I Liked:
First things first, this movie is only 88 minutes, and they waste no time in getting started with the action. The opening credits start you off by displaying the film’s great use of 3D technology with a montage-style telling of what Hansel and Gretel have been up to between childhood and adulthood.
There’s action through and through, and just when you think they’ve run out of creative ways to kill witches… they haven’t. The violence in the movie, while gratuitous and plentiful, somehow isn’t stomach turning.
There’s plenty of humor to accompany the action, breaking up any of the perceived “low” or “stale” moments which are thankfully few.
One of my favorite moments in the film is the concept that, due to eating so much candy as a child when the Witch was fattening him up, Hansel is now diabetic and has to give himself the equivalent of an insulin shot – it’s hilarious!
What I Didn’t Like:
The plot. There was so much action and fun Witch killing, I didn’t care to try to understand the plot because then I’d start to see the gaping holes in said plot.
Summary
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters was a large heaping steaming pile of mindless witch killing fun. With the short runtime and high action and comedy beats you never get the time to dwell on the weak plot. This will be a great movie to rent and own for years to come.
