Review: by Anthony
When I first saw the trailers for this movie, I was intrigued mainly because it was something I couldn't recall ever seeing, a Zombie movie from the perspective of the Zombie. That alone was enough to interest me, but then I learned that the movie had some leanings toward being a comedy, based on the zombie-that's-still-a-little-human monologue bit. Well, that had me sold. I went into the theater ready for a laugh-out-loud awkward teenage zombie boy meets girl movie.
What I Liked:
This movie took a new spin on an old-school classic, Zombies eating brains, and elaborated on it, making it something new and using it to develop the plot.
Nicholas Hoult pulled off the awkward teenager that also happens to be a Zombie very well. His comedic delivery of his inner monologue was just as funny as I had hoped it would be, and often his monologues mirrored what my own thoughts would be if I were in his situation.
Rob Corddry plays R’s best zombie friend and is just great as additional comedic relief. Although he doesn’t have many scenes, the ones he does have are laugh-out-loud-worthy.
What I Didn’t Like:
Because this was a Comedic Teenage Romance type of movie aimed at a younger demographic, I felt like there were certain parts of the plot that were rushed, poorly described, or flat out unexplained based on the assumption that the younger generation just wouldn’t care for heavy details and timetables.
Second Opinion: by Lee
Although the idea is a novel one, and it is genuinely one of a kind, this movie should not have been marketed as a comedy. The comedic value seemed to rely heavily on the characters’ zombie-dom — the whole “quick, act human” thing got old really fast. Aside from some surprising one-liners and the rare stray from their usual comedic formula, it mostly seemed like hearing the same joke told over and over again with very little variation.
Also, the acting was only mediocre.
Summary
For what this Warm Bodies is supposed to be, and for the target demographic, this is a pretty decent movie that will give you a few laughs along the way.
