Review: by Anthony

When I first saw the trailer and cast list for this movie, I knew I had to see it.  I've been a fan of each of these actors from their past movies and TV Shows, and I truly believe that they're actually friends. These guys are always popping up in each others movies: contributing to writing and screenplays, producing, and promoting each others projects.  So, a movie that gets a large group of my current favorite comedy actors and actresses together could only result in one of the funniest movies of the year.

What I Liked:

This is the only movie that comes to mind in which all of the actors are playing themselves, which is an interesting and amusing thing in itself, but in this movie they also play over-the-top, theatrical versions of themselves.  It’s hilarious.

The characters Seth Rogan and James Franco play in Pineapple Express, appear not to be characters at all but rather the actors’ natural personalities, and it doesn’t stop with just them.  There’s a plethora of Hollywood cameos of familiar faces from Aziz Ansari to Rihanna, and everybody has funny quips.

This movie, while a comedy first and foremost, doesn’t just stick to potty and slap stick humor.  The apocalypse going on around the characters brings in suspense, thrilling moments, and some scary, jump-in-your-seat moments which are great. One of the great things about this movie is that it doesn’t forget it’s a comedy.  With everything going on, there are jokes all of the time, and it’s unclear what was scripted and what was improvised because it’s all consistently funny.

What I Didn’t Like:

Since the plot of the movie is about the apocalypse, there are some religious topics introduced and discussed that would’ve been best left alone.  The possibility for error and incorrect or half-correct information is immense when movies broach those subjects.

Summary

This is the End was a hilarious movie, I’d totally go see it again in theaters and it’s a must buy on Blu-Ray DVD.
