Review: by Anthony and Lee
Let's start by telling you that we certainly did not expect The Lone Ranger to be any good at all. It looked like a terrible movie, but it had Johnny Depp; therefore, we had to see it, despite how horrible it appeared.
What We Liked:
Johnny Depp did a great job as Tonto. Recently, it has seemed like every role he portrayed ended up as Captain Jack Sparrow. Captain Jack was amusing, but seeing the same role over and over got tired. The Lone Ranger was different, and we thought he did a bang up job.
We did not expect much from Armie Hammer, but he did surprisingly well as the lead.
The make-up was done very, very well. The main villains were all extraordinarily recognizable actors, but they were disguised in such a way that it was almost impossible to tell.
Gore Verbinski and Jerry Bruckheimer were the super team that brought us the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and it appears as though they’ve created another hit. The movies share some similarities in their exciting action scenes, intricate costumes and make-up, lovable characters, and dramatic music, but they are different enough to not be cliche. We certainly look forward to some sequels.
It was an updated action/western movie. There were train and horseback chases, a band of ne’er do-wells led by a bad guy with a wicked scar, and even a damsel in distress.
Animal sidekicks are almost always a hit when providing such comic relief as Silver did.
The story was told similarly to The Princess Bride, in a non-linear storybook way. It was enjoyable.
The William Tell Overture made us grin from ear to ear. It was difficult not to hum along.
What We Didn’t Like:
It was a bit longer than necessary, and there wasn’t enough Helena Bonham Carter.
Also, it is completely unclear why everyone was so interested in the one woman. The Lone Ranger had a history with her, but the same cannot be said for Mr. Cole. It was baffling.
Summary
The Lone Ranger was unexpectedly good. We were very pleasantly surprised.
