Review: by Anthony and Lee
We loved the first Kick-Ass movie for its blend of comedy, high-intensity action, and brutal fighting. Judging by the trailers, it appeared that there'd be more of the same in Kick-Ass 2.
What We Liked:
The action was every bit as amazing as we had expected. The fighting was brutal and gory, but it refrained just enough to not be repulsive.
The acting was great. The main characters, for the most part, did a fantastic job pretending to be regular people who decided to be superheroes in order to make the world a better place. They nailed it. Chloë Grace Moretz was great in reprising her role as Hit-Girl, but she really outdid herself being “just Mindy Macready.” The scenes where she interacted with the popular “mean” girls were hilarious. Clark Duke and Christopher Mintz-Plasse also really brought the comedy with their witty one-liners. Mintz-Plasse’s names for his new villain recruits were particularly funny.
Jim Carrey and Donal Faison were great additions to the cast, playing Colonel Stars and Stripes and Dr. Gravity respectively. They were both hilarious and “brought the pain” in the fight scenes.
Anthony normally finds Morris Chestnut annoying, and can’t stand him “just cheesing his way through every scene.” In this movie, however, Anthony thought he was surprisingly tolerable.
What We Didn’t Like:
There were so many great characters and fight scenes that the main character, Dave Lizewski/Kick-Ass, actually takes a backseat in the action.
Summary
Kick-Ass 2 was a sequel that was better than the original. It surpassed the first in its action and comedy as well as the depth of the character development. It is everything you’d want from any movie sequel. If you liked the first movie, it is a definite must watch.
