Review: by Anthony and Lee
The short trailer and the knowledge that Sandra Bullock and George Clooney were the stars were all we knew about the movie going into it. We are big fans of Sandra Bullock and would see any movie of hers, but the trailer was the biggest pull for us. We couldn't help but wonder how a feature length film was going to play out when dealing with an astronaut lost in space. We wondered how it could possibly have been done.
What We Liked:
Gravity was absolutely captivating. Considering what little material (length of time a person could survive alone in space), we figured that there would be flashbacks and exposition showing the characters on Earth, but we were so wrong. We were surprised by how adeptly the story was developed.
George Clooney was fantastic. His character was beyond charismatic, and we instantly grew strong attachment to him.
Sandra Bullock is a very talented actress, and that fact was very evident in her performance in the film. Her acting made the audience root for her survival in a way unattainable to many current actresses.
The soundtrack and audio in the movie were phenomenal. Since the movie was set in the quiet of space, the use of the absence of music and sound was extremely creative and often more dramatic than the score.
The subtlety of the 3D was great. Rather than being over the top or cartoon-ish, it was used perfectly with everything from debris to actual people floating about in zero gravity.
What We Didn’t Like:
The ending, while certainly suitable, did not provide the sort of closure that some viewers may have been seeking.
Summary
Gravity was a scintillating film, creative and extremely well made. The actors and sound editors deserve great recognition for their contributions to what we can only describe as an amazing movie.
