Review: by Anthony and Lee
The initial trailers for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty did not tell much in the way of what the movie was about. We weren't sure whether it was comedy, action/adventure, romantic comedy, or other type of film. Aside from not knowing what to expect as far as genre, we also didn't get a strong sense of whether it was worth watching or not. However, we are fans of Ben Stiller and were interested in seeing him direct and star in this film.
What We Liked:
The cinematography really made the movie. It was stunning, leaving us with the opinion that all non-urban areas of Europe and Asia are breathtaking gorgeous. The scenes in Iceland and Greenland really made us want to take a personal vacation there.
Ben Stiller went from being an office desk jockey to being a travelling adventurer in the movie, and it really felt like we were along for the ride.
Sean Penn was a surprise. He had us convinced that he wasn’t playing a role at all, but was actually just being himself, an old school photographer, traveling the world and seeing the beauty that’s missed by those stuck indoors in the rat race.
The movie had a clear theme. It was delivered a bit heavy handed at times, but it was there and impossible to miss. Walter daydreamed more often than he ought about being or doing something else, usually missing out on life going on around him.
What We Didn’t Like:
Almost scene with Kristen Wiig and Ben Stiller seemed overly awkward. Way beyond the typical shyness to talk to the girl you have a crush on.
Also, Adam Scott’s character was annoying. I understand that he was the “bad guy,” the hard ass, annoying, cookie cutter new boss, but the most annoying part to me was his Wooly Willy beard.
Summary
The cinematography was awesome, and although it was obvious there was a strong, consistent, uplifting theme.
