Review: by Anthony and Lee
Nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor, Robert Redford's latest movie All Is Lost had him at the helm of a boat at sea, encountering setback after setback. It sounded like it would have a Castaway feel to it, so we were interested to see how things would play out.
What We Liked:
Robert Redford did an amazing job of carrying on an entire movie with virtually no speaking and was completely believable in his unnamed role. He looked as if he were just out sailing his personal boat on the weekend, and the film crew just happened to be there.
What We Didn’t Like:
Aside from a brief introduction, there was no talking in the film. Robert Redford was the only actor, and he didn’t even talk to himself.
As a direct effect of the lack of dialogue, the movie was extremely visually demanding. There were a lot of subtle nuances that had to be picked up by an attentive watcher, and the movie left us with more question than when we started. Why was he out sailing in the Indian Ocean without a partner in the first place?
Summary
We would not suggest All Is Lost to anyone other than an adamant Robert Redford fanatic.
