Review: by Anthony and Lee
We really enjoyed Steve Harvey's movie Think Like a Man, so we were excited to see its sequel.
In Think Like a Man Too, the entire crew reunited to celebrate Lauren (Henson) and Michael’s (Terrence J) wedding in Las Vegas. As each group, guys and girls, attempted to throw the perfect bachelor/bachelorette party for the happy couple, problems arose. Hilarious hi-jinks, misunderstandings, and rehashing of old arguments ensued.
What We Liked:
It definitely had its funny moments. That is for sure. Kevin Hart was himself, and, in true form, delivered most of the comedy. His long, rambling rants were the highlights of the movie.
The acting was nothing out of the ordinary, no better or worse than in the last movie, but we did enjoy certain scenes tremendously because, again, they were funny. For example, there was a full-on music video in the middle of the film, featuring the ladies.
What We Didn’t Like:
Having granted that the movie was funny, that was about all there was. It was also exceedingly offensive.
For a movie that was a sequel of a movie that was based on a relationship self-help book, it was surprisingly anti-relationships. It played into so many of the stereotypes. Most of the jokes in the movie were anti-marriage, either directly stating that someone shouldn’t get married or indirectly showing how unhappy married people are. It also played up the “all men cheat” angle. No, there was no sexual intercourse with people outside of the relationships, but there was plenty of talk about how it is men’s nature to want to shop around or ogle other women. It was completely disrespectful and misogynistic.
When it wasn’t anti-relationship, however, it was racist. There were several jokes about the differences between white people and black people, which were founded in some seriously ill-conceived stereotypes, and that is not something that we find amusing.
Apart from being in poor taste, however, the plot was predictable. We called several things happening long before they ever actually happened. Even some of the so-called solutions to the characters’ problems were easily spotted from miles away. It was also incredibly unoriginal to have each of the relationships encountering the exact same issues as the first movie.
Finally, La La was entirely useless. She didn’t even have many lines. She was just there. And, while we stated that the acting was the same, we must point out that Terrence J is a terrible actor.
Summary
We were exceedingly disappointed in Think Like a Man Too. It lacked the depth of the first movie, and played up all of the same problems. It was also highly offensive and predictable.
