[Movie News] Sony Planning a Female Superhero Movie in Spider-Man Universe
Sony has come out in what looks like a rush to beat Marvel Studios, FOX, and Warner Bros. by announcing their plans for a female superhero or, super heroine movie within their Spider-man universe.
Lisa Joy is working on the script, Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing and that’s practically all the information available at the time.
The most important piece of information that we’re all waiting to find out is which female within the Spider-man universe is about to have a movie focused on them.
Will it be Felicia Hardy a.k.a. Black Cat, Silver Sablinova a.k.a. Silver Sable, or one of the many different women to hold the title of Spider-woman (Jessica Drew, Julia Carpenter, Mattie Franklin, Charlotte Witter, or Veranke).
The news of Sony’s interest in a female superhero film comes on the heels of the success of Scarlett Johansson’s turn as an action star in Lucy two weeks ago. The film proved that there is an appetite for female-driven action movies. It topped the box office with $43.9 million in its debut, taking out its action pic competition, Hercules. Marvel also recently announced that it would be launching a comic book starring a female Thor.
After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had a disappointing performance at the box office this summer, Sony pushed the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which had been dated for June 10, 2016, to 2018. Sinister Six, which focuses on the villains of the Spider-Man universe, will hit theaters on Nov. 11, 2016. Drew Goddard will direct.
