Review: by The Superior Spider-Sam
Charlie Day, Jason Bateman, and Jason Sudeikis are back again- this time out to get revenge after being cheated out of their life savings? And they have the aid of a man named Motherf***er Jones? Of course I was watching this!
What I Liked:
Not too much to say here. If you are a fan of the first, you will be a fan of this. This movie is absolutely hilarious. I will say that it does deserve some credit for not being one of those sequels like Anchorman 2 or The Hangover 2 & 3 that sort of fell flat when compared to the original. This seems like a half baked money grab on the outside, but this movie is legitimately funny in its own right.
Charlie Day, Jason Bateman, and Jason Sudeikis are an awesome trio that I actually would not mind watching week to week on a show in the same vein asIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. They have great on-screen chemistry (which can be seen in the film’s outtakes in the end) and this only makes the movie better.
Chris Pine joining the cast as the seriously demented Rex was also a treat. I do not believe I have seen Chris Pine in a comedy role prior to this, and while not too funny in his own right, he does serve well as someone who the jokes bounce off of. He was a welcome addition to turn the trio of idiots into a quartet even though his character was way douchey.
Also, I thought I would dislike the use of the old “bosses” from the previous film (Spacey and Aniston) since the sequel essentially had nothing to do with that plot, but they are used infrequently and very well.
And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that Motherf***er Jones, along with his negotiation tactics, is a GREAT addition to this movie.
What I Didn’t Like:
Again, this is kind of like watching another episode in a season of a TV comedy. If you don’t like the brand of comedy that you saw on the first one, you may not like this one.
Other than that, the only real issue I had with this movie is that it started out unfunny. I admit, I was worried in the beginning when I found myself stone-faced and not amused at the jokes being throw out. It’s a shame that the beginning portion of the movie just did not live up to the rest.
Summary
Horrible Bosses 2 is a rare comedy sequel that is every bit as good as its predecessor. If you are a fan of the first or even just a fan of any of the three lead characters, this is a movie you should watch.
