Review: by Faith and Marie
We were very excited to see this sequel. The first movie was highly entertaining, funny and full of music, which sparked our interest to see the second movie.
The Barden Bellas are back in this movie, and due to a mishap in a performance, they find themselves suspended. In order to lift the suspension the Bellas have to compete and win the World Acapella Competition, which no American team has ever won. Becca’s (Anna Kendrick) loyalty and dedication to the Bellas are questioned when she accepts an internship with a recording studio. The Bellas struggle along the way with finding their harmony and working together as a team, seeking help from Bella alumni, Aubrey (Anna Camp) at a weekend retreat. They also touch on the ladies’ fears of what is to come next in their lives after graduation.
What I Liked:
Our favorite part of this movie was when the Bellas were invited to an underground acapella battle hosted by an acapella enthusiast, played by David Cross.
They had to compete against four other groups including a special guest appearance by the Green Bay Packers, who actually sang and danced surprising well.
It was very nice to see the entire original cast of main characters from the first movie return for this sequel.
Another thing we like was the nostalgic elements that were incorporated into the movie. The Bellas, after a trying time at a boot camp like retreat, found their harmony singing Anna Kendrick’s “Cups” which was Becca’s audition song from the first movie.
Also in their final performance, at the World competition, they were joined onstage by countless Barden Bella Alumni.
What I Didn’t Like:
Even though this movie was extremely comical and full of great jokes, we were not too thrilled with a few of the highly controversial jokes that were made, mainly by the Judges, John and Gail, from the acapella board.
Some of the jokes went a little too far in the wrong direction especially dealing with race and gender.
Summary
We were very entertained by Pitch Perfect 2, we laughed non stop. The songs were upbeat and fun, as well as the dancing. The underlying message of friendship, teamwork, and not being afraid to move forward in life was endearing and made for an inspirational twist to the silly, raunchy comedy. We will be quite excited if the decision is made to make a third movie in the future.
