[Movie News] Gwendoline Christie says She’ll Be in ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’
Gwendoline Christie will return in Star Wars: Episode VIII as Captain Phasma.
This is great news because honestly there wasn’t a lot of Captain Phasma in The Force Awakens, so I’m pumped to get confirmation that we’ll see more of Gwendoline Christie’s character in the future.
As “Star Wars” information slowly trickles out — like the fact that “Episode IX” will be shot in film instead of digital — “The Force Awakens” actress Gwendoline Christie has confirmed that she’ll return as Captain Phasma in the upcoming installment.
“I will be in the next Star Wars movie,” the actress, who also stars in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” toldPeople on Saturday on the SAG Awards red carpet.
“I was very overexcited. I made no secret of the fact that I really campaigned for the part for a long time,” she said. “And then I was delighted when J.J. Abrams wanted to have me in the film and then wanted to cast me in this role that had originally been designed for a man.”
The part was indeed originally slated to go to a man, but, standing at 6’3, Christie proved a fittingly intimidating presence for the part, and was cast just a few weeks before principal photography began.
Rian Johnson will be helming “Episode VIII,” with Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac returning for the sequel. Disney announced last week that the film has been pushed from a March 26, 2017, release date to Dec. 15, 2017.
