I know Marvel got a little flack for taking this long to get a female lead superhero, but this didn’t feel overdue for me? Maybe it’s because Peggy Carter, Black Widow, and Wanda did plenty enough to tide me over in terms of great strong female characters. And that was before Black Panther introduced us to Shuri, Okoye, Nakia, and Ramonda to name a few. So I believe this came at the right time and fits well into MCU library. I think Marvel understood the importance of this movie as their first female superhero title and gave it the proper TLC. The result is a wonderfully enjoyable product that allows the character to hold her own in a very crowded superhero movie-verse, be it MCU, DC, or other.
Carol Danvers joins the Avengers fray as we go back to the 90s to see how she becomes one of the most powerful heroes in the universe. Two alien races are at war and Earth is caught in the middle, potentially housing a weapon that could tip the scales. It’s up to Danvers and S.H.I.E.L.D. to work to put a stop to it before this weapon ends up in the wrong hands.
What I Liked:
Goose! My favorite character! But I won’t say any more than that as I’m keeping this generally spoiler-free.
I liked Brie Larson’s approach to Carol Danvers aka Vers aka Captain Marvel. She has a distinct personality without being too over the top. I think this is a good role for her and I look forward to how the character will contribute to the MCU franchise in future. She can get pretty physical, so I am curious to see how she would throw down in a sparring match with Black Widow (sans special powers). In fact she comes off as a blend between Wanda and Black Widow from an abilities standpoint in some ways. The best of both worlds.
Sam Jackson is great as a much greener Nick Fury and is a good sidekick to Carol. You can tell he enjoys playing this character and evolving with him. They did a good job on making him look believably younger. In contrast, effects-wise I didn’t think they did quite as good of a job with Clark Gregg as young Coulson, though Gregg’s performance as a much more naive Coulson was well done and it was good to see how their relationship began.
If you’re a kid or teen of the of the 90s like I was, get ready for a nostalgia bomb.com. That alone is half the fun. This movie really laid it on thick and I loved it!
What I Didn’t Like:
This was solid film and the characters were good, however there were some emotional scenes that didn’t totally grip me, feeling a tad contrived and a touch formulaic. It felt like a plot device necessary to move onto the next act; but this doesn’t make or break the movie.
Summary
All in all it’s a must see! Based on the trailers I wasn’t sure how much I would like it but it majorly exceeded my expectations and I’m looking forward to seeing it again already. They also do a fabulous tribute to Stan Lee in the opening credits that I think fans will really appreciate.
