Mysteries have always been enjoyable for me. Not necessarily my go-to movie genre (probably because most mystery movies don't make it to the big screen), but I love a good mystery novel. When I first heard about this movie I thought 'cool', and then I saw the cast and that 'cool' turned into... 'oh this is going to be good'. Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jaime Lee Curtis, Christopher Plummer, Michael Shannon, and one of my favorites Lakeith Standfield. But the list doesn't stop there. The cast was pretty solid.
Okay, let’s get into it. The movie starts with the discovery of a dead Harlen Thrombey, best-selling mystery novel author. He has three children and their spouses, a handful of grandchildren, a nurse, and a housekeeper (I think, I don’t really remember her official title). The family had just thrown their father an 85th birthday party the night before so everyone was home. The death was declared a suicide, but the case is reopened when special detective Benoit Blanc receives a request to take the case. There’s been foul play.
What I Liked:
The story kept me guessing for a good amount of time, almost till the end! And even when I did figure out ‘who dun it’, I didn’t figure out exactly how, so the story was good. The characters, though they all come off as kind of ‘stupid’, were all played really well. I really liked that the comedy was subtle. It wasn’t HAHA in your face funny but there was a constant stream of small quips and some good stabs at current social conversations that kept you pleasantly amused at all times.
What I Didn’t Like:
I’m not sure, I don’t know if its because I don’t really watch mystery movies but I didn’t have any issues with the movie, it was entertaining. I do feel like I’m easy to please movie-wise though. If I’m stretching and looking for something I would say that it could’ve been less obvious ‘who dun it’ but maybe I’m just good at mystery lol.
Summary
The movie was good quality, interesting story, funny and entertaining. Great actors, and no outlandish scenes so younger kids can watch (If they understand death). In terms of going to see it in theaters, I think its a good date night movie to please both people in the party. Or even a good movie to see with a group of friends. But even if you don’t see it in movies I’m sure you’ll watch it on a plane in the future.
