When The Mandalorian was first announced and the trailer was shown at 2019's D23 Expo I was beyond excited to watch this. Everyone loves Jango Fett. Everyone loves Boba Fett. Everyone loves the armor, the jetpack, the blasters. Now we get a show focused on a Mandalorian bounty hunter and his exploits. How could you NOT be excited for this?!
Disney+’s hit show The Mandalorian takes place 5 years after Return of the Jedi. The Mandalorian is working odd bounty jobs here and there to make a living when after taking on a job for a high paying client he encounters a very peculiar package.
What I Liked:
One of the things I liked about The Mandalorian is the setting. It’s shortly after Return of the Jedi so I felt like there wasn’t much back story I had to fill-in in my mind. I could right away judge the state of things. The Empire has been defeated but there are still vestigates of its rule visible everywhere. I liked that there were multiple different planets and terrains were shown, along with a good variety of ships which is great to remind you this is a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.
Another thing I liked was the action. Practically every episode had some good fight scenes or shoot outs that almost rivaled scenes from John Wick. One scene in particular that I liked was in Chapter 6: The Prisoner. When Mando and the crew he’s working with are swarmed by security droids, Mando leaps into action. Parrying, countering, using his blaster and flamethrower Mando and takes down the droids in an efficient and systematic fashion showing why so many have respect and reverence for Mandalorians and their battle prowess.
Along with the action was the careful use or rather selective use of CGI and the embrace of practical effects. Aside from the things that were obviously fantastical, everything looked real as though the show as filmed on actual sets with costumes and clever makeup rather than green scenes and motion capture.
Lastly, I’d be crazy to not mention the real reason this show was a smash hit and success. Baby Yoda. Yes, technically he’s listed at “The Child” and he’s not the child version of Yoda that we know. But, he is clearly a child, 50 years old, of the same alien species that Yoda is. It’s just easier to call him Baby Yoda until stated otherwise. Having said that, Baby Yoda is everything. He’s so cute….and dangerous….and cute….and just wants to eat all the frogs and push all the buttons in the spaceship.
What I Didn’t Like:
I really liked the show. I liked the cameos in each episode, Taikia Waititi, Ming Na Wen, Bill Burr, and Jason Sudeikis to name a few.
The only thing I can think of that I didn’t like is so nit-picky is something I wouldn’t even deduct points from. How do the fricking bounty tracking fobs work? Like how Sway?
Summary
The Mandalorian on Disney+ is a must-watch. Even if you’re not the biggest Star Wars fan. Even if you’re only considering signing up for Disney+ for the Marvel Cinematic Universe offerings. I implore you to watch this. It’s a great story in the Star Wars world which only deepens and enriches that franchise. Season 2 is sure to be a hit.
