What I Liked:
It is almost impossible to discuss this film without going into some minor spoilers not previously shown in TV Spots and Trailers. That is to say- MINOR SPOILER WARNING. Those previews would lead you believe this is another story about Laurie vs Michael; however Michael is used very sparingly in this film. This is more the story of Corey (portrayed by Rohan Campbell) who, after a series of unfortunate events, becomes a disciple of Michael’s and continues his reign of terror over the small town of Haddonfield. Further complicating things is Corey’s relationship with the one person in town who treats him with compassion, Laurie’s granddaughter Allison (Andi Matichek).
While his relationship with the granddaughter of the series protagonist is unbelievable (more on that later), Corey himself is a strength of the film. Unlike the faceless monster that is Michael Myers, Corey has depth and personality. We as the audience see his descent to evil and can understand his motivations (even if they are a bit weak). Campbell himself does a decent job of making Corey come off as both sympathetic as you see his origin to completely frightening as he makes his descent to becoming the “new” Michael.
That’s not to say Michael is completely absent. The main antagonist of the series is used sparingly but well. We do get the final confrontation between him and Laurie, and it is actually very satisfying during the third act of the film.
Another thing that stood out to me was the camera work in the film. There are example, several POV shots where we are basically looking through the character’s eyes as they themselves are staring in a mirror- creative shots like these add a bit of flare to the film experience.
What I Didn’t Like:
So I actually didn’t enjoy this film overall. I think it’s definitely better than the second film but not as good as the first (which I thought itself was just okay). There are many things I could point to such as the odd censoring of some kills IN A SLASHER FILM; or the unreal amount of time it takes for the slashing to actually start occurring; but, my main problem with the film…I just don’t believe it. I mean all of it. It is unbelievable to me how Laurie acts very laid back and nonchalant at the beginning of this film after she was hell bent to kill Michael during the previous two films. It is unbelievable to me that Michael has somehow been dormant, living on the outskirts of town, for four years without explanation. It is unbelievable that high school teens who berate and harass Corey (an adult) would continue to berate and harass him after they clearly crossed a line. It is unbelievable that Allison forms a romantic bond with Corey so strong that she ignores the warnings of her grandmother who literally predicted everything that happened in the past two films.
The overall complaint- people do not act this way. This was beyond usual stupidity of horror movie characters; these people weren’t simply making dumb decisions, it was more like they were ignoring the world they live in as if prior scenes/experiences didn’t occur. This leads no character, outside of Corey, really having an arc and that aspect pretty much tanked this movie for me because I was aware the entire time that I was just watching people read lines. I was not at all drawn in.
Oh, and lastly the movie is not scary. At all.
Summary
Bottom line, this is better than the second but not as good as the first in the trilogy. If you are a fan of the series there is something here for you. Casual fans of horror may be left wanting. I would recommend waiting to stream.
