Review by: Samuel
There’s a lot to say about Michael B Jordan and Ryan Coogler’s latest. Mostly good (great actually), but there were several things I did not expect to dislike in the film that popped up as well. Overall, I really enjoyed the film, so let’s discuss my likes and dislikes.
What I Liked:
Strong Performances: Michael B. Jordan shines playing twin brothers — distinct personalities, mannerisms, and voices made it feel like two different people. Haley Steinfeld and supporting cast also delivered excellent performances to the point you forget you are watching a movie and honestly feel like you are looking into the past of 1930s Mississippi (at least until vampires arrive).
World-Building & Atmosphere: Speaking of the way the movie looked, Ryan Coogler’s artistic touches stood out. This movie take a LONG time to make you know this world and these people in it. It’s not a vampire gore-fest from beginning to end, which is appreciated. The 1930s Mississippi setting felt authentic thanks to wardrobe, production design, and dialogue. Again, I must stress this is a long film with a slow burn, but it pays off as the slow buildup allowed viewers to really care about the characters before the vampire horror kicked in.
Direction & Cinematography : Now, in terms of straight cinematography there is an especially unique music scene blending decades of Black culture through dance and instruments. It’s a one shot scene that seemed to utilize a drone or something similar, and combined with the sound design the impact was heightened. This scene alone might be worth the price of admission. Of course the action that does show up is well executed. When the vampires are revealed, those scenes were chilling and palpable. Those red eyes of theirs are things of nightmares- excellent looking villains.
What I Didn’t Like:
Runtime & Pacing: The film felt too long with some unnecessary scenes, especially a double ending that sort of confused the tone established in regards to the way vampires feel about humans. Additionally, as stated above the action doesn’t pick up until very late (end of second act), which may frustrate some people who were looking for a nonstop action-horror flick.
Plot: Specifically the subplots in film. Some subplots (such as the repercussions of money stolen by the twins Jordan plays) felt underexplained or unresolved. Additionally, the vampires’ motivations were vague. They attacked this particular group of people for a reason but it’s never clearly defined what they wanted or why.
Additionally, the disbelief factor starts to really come into play (yes, in a movie about vampires). When you see how many vampires there are some scenes showing their struggle against regular humans felt a bit too unbelievable given their overwhelming physical strength and sheer numbers.
This movie is VERY loud. While that is mostly in it’s favor, sometimes the overpowering sound mixing made the dialogue hard to hear.
Overall, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan deliver a bold, stylish blend of action, horror, and culture in Sinners. Set in 1930s Mississippi, the film builds rich atmosphere and emotional depth before unleashing a vampire-fueled second half. Jordan impresses playing twin brothers with distinct identities, and the cinematography and music sequences shine with artistic flair.
However, the film stumbles with its runtime, an unnecessary double ending, and unclear vampire motivations. Some scenes overstay their welcome, and the plot occasionally meanders. Despite that, Sinners is an ambitious and memorable film with standout performances and powerful visuals. It’s a movie I would certainly watch again.
Summary
Worth watching, especially if you love character-driven genre blends that take their time.
