The description and cast of In a World told us all we needed to know about it. We wanted to see it, and we figured we would like it. We were right.

What We Liked:

The characters and the actors portraying them really made the movie great. Lake Bell was the indisputable star of the movie, and the fact that she wrote, directed, produced and starred in the movie makes her all the more impressive. Not to be outdone, Fred Melamed played the smug, conceited, selfish, unlikable Sam Soto perfectly, stealing every scene and making everything about him. Finally, Demetri Martin was fantastic as the quirky love interest. The scenes where he is Carol’s producer, trying awkwardly to cross the line from work friendship to romantic relationship were great.

While the characters and actors were good, the subject matter was what really drew us in because it is a topic not often discussed. Who gives a second thought to the voice of Colgate or the voice behind the latest Nickelodeon movie trailer? It was actually pretty fascinating.

It was also interesting to see the voice-over artists in the movie have their own Hollywood-esque cliques at parties. Although they weren’t the big names receiving Oscars and Emmy’s, the they still participated in the stereotypical Hollywood backstabbing, bragging, and one-up-man-ship.

What We Didn’t Like:

There was a small storyline in which Carol’s sister, Dani (Watkins), and her husband, Moe (Corddry), had marital problems that arose from Dani’s crush on a superior at work. While the storyline played out just fine, it really didn’t add anything to the main plot of the movie. It could have easily been done away with in favor of more comedic scenes of Carol doing her voice coach work.

Summary

In a World was a quirky, funny movie with an interesting premise, and Lake Bell did a phenomenal job of writing, directing, producing and starring in this movie.
