Review: by Heidi

I was pretty darn excited to see Fantastic Four, not because I’m an avid comic book reader or Marvel fanatic. I just know that Marvel movies are in my opinion always entertaining. Guaranteed mix of action and comedy, with maybe a little hint of romance; just a few of my favorite things. A lot of people had huge reservations about Johnny Storm being played by Michael B. Jordan because of his condition of being black, but that personally only made me that much more excited to see the film. Besides the obvious loss of Jessica Alba’s presence I couldn’t see anything that might take away from my enjoyment of the new, younger take on a great story.

Young Reed is discovered and enlisted to work with a group of other young engineers to create a teleportation device to another dimension. A place, which if reached, would be able to supply an abundance of natural resources to improve life on planet earth. Upon completion of the device, the engineers teleport themselves, but it does not go quite as planned. In result they each acquire new abilities. Now they must accept the fate of their new selves or try to fix what some of them viewed as broken. In the process one of the bunch decides that life on earth is DOOM-ed (lol) and might as well end now, so he takes it upon himself to do just that. The remaining four bans together to save our planet from complete destruction. And thus the Fantastic Four were born.

What I Liked:

I liked the entire younger generation perspective. Seeing the young child scientist reaching his goals, going off and becoming an engineer. I felt it was very inspiring, especially for the young children that will inevitably watch this movie over and over again. Watching Reed and Ben’s relationship from the very beginning was awesome to me, great relationship development that pulled me even further into caring about them as individuals. Same thing goes for Dr. Doom, Johnny, and Sue. They were not the main focus but seeing these iconic characters with young fresh personality was pretty intriguing.  Watching all of the young moments was just very amusing, especially Reed’s first time getting drunk.

What I Didn’t Like:

The lack of action. When I think Marvel, I expect action. There was a little but definitely not as much as I would like. The movie was also pretty corny, however I attribute that to the fact they were supposed to be young. I heard a couple other moviegoers grumbling about plot changes but like I stated before, I’m no expert.

Summary

Overall, I enjoyed the character development and the pure entertainment found in the simplicity of youth. Could’ve been funnier and could’ve had more action but still worth seeing in my opinion, I mean its Marvel… and black Johnny is awesome.
