Review: by Marie

Being that Trolls was a toy dated all the way back to the 1960s, I was super happy and excited to see a movie come out to represent just that.  This movie was cute, colorful and musically perfect which definitely kept the attention of myself and my 6-year-old God-daughter.

The movie centers itself on troll Princess Poppy (voiced by Anna Kendrick), who teams up with the grumpy troll Branch (voiced by Justin Timberlake) to rescue her friends from the troll-hungry Bergens. During this trip everyone learns valuable lessons about inner happiness, not giving up and being proud of whom you are. With the fuzzy feel to the movie, it softens some of the danger and peril. Little kids are likely to be slightly scared of the greedy, hungry Bergens. And children may hide their eyes when Poppy and her friends come in contact with danger and have several narrow escapes. Also, there is a sad moment when Branch remembers losing someone he loved.

Two of the Bergens do flirt and strike some “sexy” poses while exchanging a couple mild innuendoes. Bodily function humor includes the projectile-glitter farts of Poppy’s sparkly friend, Guy Diamond, whose glittery buttocks are also visible. Expect a few uses of “OMG” /”oh my gah” (the ending of the word is left undefined) and “stupid” other insults. But in the end what you will end of remembering are the fabulous songs, strong themes of friendship and empathy with all of these fun characters.

What I Liked:

My favorite part of this movie takes place when Poppy and Branch finally free their troll friends from the Bergens and meet a lonely Bergen herself Bridget (voiced by Zooey Deschanel).  Bridget ends up breaking down into singing the Trolls rendition of “Hello” referring to Bridget’s crush King Gristle (voiced by Christopher Mintz-Plasse). Poppy and the rest of her colorful friends end up helping Bridget by giving her a makeover to be able to impress her crush, the King of the Bergens.

What I Didn’t Like:

To me, there was not anything to dislike about this movie. I thought that the storyline, as well as the jokes and music, kept mine and my god-daughters attention throughout the entirety of the film. I believe that the flirty innuendoes and harmless jokes are just that and are not harmful towards the sight of children.

Summary

Children and adults are going to love this movie. It is super bright and colorful and has loads of catchy songs and the messages are positive and easy to understand (happiness is inside of everyone, if you know where/how to find it, and you shouldn’t have to change who you are to get someone to like you). Sometimes it is nice to actually go out and see a kids movie, especially one that’s full of songs you (as a parent) can also sing along to. Needless to say you will never be bored while watching this film and the songs may be stuck in your head long after even leaving the movie theater.
