[Book Review] Time (2019) by Penny Reid

Author's Website

Plot Summary: A (brokenhearted) physicist. Now an infamous (who is LITERALLY EVERYWHERE!! UGH!) musician. The worst has already happened. Mona has learned that she has nothing figured out and plans are meaningless. After leaving her in Aspen, Abram is now breaking sales-records, rising to rock star fame almost overnight. Mona can’t seem to escape him. He is literally everywhere, or at least images of him are. Just when she thinks things can't get any more confusing, Abram returns . . . What happens next? Only TIME will tell.

It always seems like a lifetime waiting for the next installment in a book series. Even though the Laws of Physics trilogy parts were published only a month apart, the feeling has been the same. I couldn't wait to see how the story would end in Book 3: Time.

Now in a somewhat established relationship, Mona and Abram have to work, independently and as a couple, to build trust and security, which is a particularly difficult feat considering both have very busy schedules. With Abram on his first album tour and Mona working on her thesis overseas, what they desperately need is more time.

What I Liked:

Time focuses entirely as Abram and Mona as a couple. There is very little drama surrounding their establishment as such, which I appreciate. Many romance novels put newly formed couples through some sort of trial that makes them question everything, down to the very foundations of their relationships. Mona and Abram, however, have no such issue. Each has their own introspective dilemma, but neither doubts their love for each other.

Speaking of introspection, Penny Reid herself pointed out in a message to her fans that the trilogy as a whole lacks action and is mostly thought-driven rather that plot-driven. It is, in fact, quite cerebral, which is not at all a problem for me. It gives a lot of focus to their past trauma and insecurities, which is more reflective of real relationships than most literary ones. Sure, the trilogy begins with highly implausible hijinks and, as a whole, portrays lifestyles about which most Americans can only dream, but the thoughts, feelings, and hesitations are relatable, especially Mona’s concerns about wanting the same things out of life.

One of the best things about Time, however, isn’t about Mona and Abram’s relationship with each other. Rather, the mending of relationships between Mona and her siblings is what made me happiest. Mona has a lot of emotional growing to do at the start of the novel, and I’m pleased with the results.

What I Didn’t Like:

Unfortunately for me but probably few other readers, there was much more sex in this installment in that there was sex at all. In the first book, Mona and Abram hadn’t even kissed. In the second, they kissed, but their sexual interaction never progressed further than groping. Time, on the other hand, features the couple consummating their new relationship as often as the two can manage.

My only other hang up about the novel is that we don’t see where they end up. Sure, we see them a few months down the line, but I guess readers will just have to see if Mona and Abram pop up in later novel series to see how things turn out.

Summary

Time was a sweet ending to the tale of Mona and Abram. It isn’t super dramatic, but it is still interesting, especially if you’re into explicit sex scenes.
