[TV Show News] ‘The Last of Us’ Series in Development at HBO From ‘Chernobyl’ Creator

Ok, so I have several thoughts about this.

The Last of Us (2013) is on the shortlist of must-play video games from the last decade. It’s truly earned all of the accolades and praise it’s received due to the fantastic story that’s told.

However, that story is set in a zombie apocalypse of which there are several….several TV shows, movies, and lesser video games in current memory in that same genre so another project in that world feels like overkill.

Great video games with an intriguing story that makes the player feel as though they’re controlling a player in a movie lacks that appeal if you were to just make a movie and remove the player. I want to be in the game not just watch a long cutscene.

Now on the other side of this argument is that this project is coming from the creator of HBO’s Chernobyl which was great. So taking an already existing property/story and adapting it into something new and enthralling is not brand new to Craig Mazin.

All of that to say, this is interesting and I’ll be watching at least the first few episodes.

A series adaptation of the Playstation game “The Last of Us” is in development at HBO.

“Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin is attached to write and executive produce the potential series along with Neil Druckmann, the writer and creative director of the game. Carolyn Strauss will also executive produce along with Evan Wells, president of game development studio Naughty Dog. The project is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and in association with PlayStation Productions. The project is the first television series from PlayStation Productions.

“Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and ‘The Last of Us’ is his magnum opus,” said Mazin. “Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honored to do it in partnership with Neil.”
