OMG it’s happening!

I’ve wanted another adaptation of the Percy Jackson series for so long and it’s finally happening. Not only is it happening but it’s going to be on Disney Plus where I have strong faith that the right amount of care and marketing will be put into the project to give it the best shot at succeeding.

During the craze to find the next Harry Potter or Twilight there were so many Young Adult novels that were adapted and rushed onto the big screen that completely flopped and it crushed me to count Percy Jackson amongst them. The movies in 2010 and 2013 starring Logan Lerman, Brandon T Jackson, and Alexandria Daddario were not completely terrible but they were far from the best representation for this book series.

I’d argue that most book series rarely do well in a movie adaptation. It’s hard to squeeze so much character development and storytelling into a 2-hour movie. However, a full 10 to 13 episode season of a TV show works best. Could you imagine all of Season 1 of Game of Thrones squeezed into a 2-hour movie?

The Percy Jackson and the Olympians series have five books but then there’s multiple follow up series such as The Heroes of Olympus, The Trials of Apollo, The Kane Chronicles, and Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard. All of these books happen in the same world with multiple characters crossing over and interacting with the new heroes.

So there’s a rich rich history for this new show to pull from and build onto and hopefully tell the tale in a way that opens the door for more adaptations.

A Percy Jackson series is currently in the early stages of development at Disney Plus.

Rick Riordan, author of the Percy Jackson book series, made the announcement Thursday in a video on Twitter alongside his wife Becky.

Rick then followed up with a statement, which reads in part, “We can’t say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one. Rest assured that Becky & I will be involved in person in every aspect of the show.”
